The problem
AI ended the written exam’s credibility.
There is no reliable way left to tell a student’s own writing from a language model’s. Written take-home work, the format most online courses leaned on, no longer proves the student who gets the grade is the one who did the work.
The same loss of trust shows up further down the stack too: recycled question-and-answer banks, and paid stand-ins sitting certification and training courses on a student’s behalf. Every workaround costs honest students and the institution’s own credibility.

A typed answer travels well: between tabs, between students, between a browser and a paid essay mill. An oral answer doesn’t. Vokalix asks students to say their answer aloud, verifies who is speaking, and watches the room while they do it.
The result reads like an oral exam because it is one, just scheduled through your existing course, graded without a proctor in the room, and returned to your gradebook the moment it’s done.

How it works
From course link to graded attempt, in one sitting.
Launch
The student opens the exam from inside your LMS. Their identity and course context arrive with the launch, so there’s no separate account and no extra password.
Verify
A short camera and microphone check confirms the student, the room, and the equipment before the clock starts.
Speak
Each question is answered aloud. Speech is transcribed and scored live; the room is watched for the duration.
Grade
A grade and a proctoring report are generated the moment the student submits, and the grade is written back to your course automatically.

Nothing new to install
The exam opens straight out of the course in Moodle. No separate app, no extra account for the student to set up first.

Face verification

An empty chair, a second face, or a student stepping out of frame is logged and timestamped.

The same spoken-answer format carries over naturally to foreign-language speaking exams: assessing speaking proficiency already means listening to a student speak. Pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension can be scored live, on camera, in the student’s own voice, the same way multiple-choice knowledge is today.

Already running at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Piloted as a voluntary grading component in HUJI’s largest biology courses, serving hundreds of students in a single semester.
